The wondrous possibilities of an infinite mindset

How do you go about setting your goals and measuring the outcomes of these goals? When you do this, who do you measure yourself against? We tend to focus our energy on being better (or becoming better) than each other, whether we compare ourselves against competitors, our family or even our friends… sjoe, what a depressing way to live a life?

There is a better way that will open your mind to new and wonderous possibilities. In his book, Finite and Infinite Games, James P. Carse notes that: “There are at least two kinds of games. One could be called finite, the other infinite. A finite game is played for the purpose of winning, an infinite game for the purpose of continuing to play”.

Your ability to make a difference and thus improving yourself, other people or situations increases significantly when you think with an infinite mindset. When thinking this way, you are competing against yourself, instead of competing against others. The questions you ask thus change:

  • How can I improve myself or my business;
  • How do we make our products or services better;
  • How do we increase the value our clients derive from of our products or services;
  • How do we improve the quality of our customer service;
  • How do we enhance the qualities of our leaders and managers;
  • How do we make the culture in our organisation stronger.
As entrepreneurs, business leaders and trendsetters we tend to find ourselves in a space where people do not see the picture we see, or maybe you even find that your idea/ideas are seen as being farfetched… When you find yourself in this position it is time to push forward – not blindly, but it is time to formalize your vision and your strategy. It is important to set goals, but it is also important to understand that there are no boundaries, the regular way of doing things needs to change, there is no finishing line or winner, and we need to consistently ask ourselves how can we continue to outdo ourselves?

It is remarkable to see what we can accomplish once we have a clear picture of our vision – guided by our mission and believes, we can accomplish more than we ever dreamed of… But can we really?
The answer is unequivocally YES!, we can!

  • We need to create an organisation, a culture, a vision that each and every employee, client and stakeholder buy’s into;
  • We need to ensure that we live our vision and do not waiver or deviate from our believes;
  • We need to ensure that we build a trusting team;
  • We need to practice genuine flexibility – this may mean that we need to change the existing business model, no matter how much we have invested in it;
  • There is tremendous power in setting goals and planning the steps to achieve them – not only do you know ahead of time what you require and when you require it, but you and your team can plan to achieve it. Yes, you will have obstacles and threats… but there is strength in being prepared;
  • You need to measure and critically analyse your progress and where required change or update your goals to ensure that you live your vision;
  • You will require the courage to lead and the resilience not to change course because of obstacles along the way.

Whether you have an established business or have a dream to create one – we all possess the ability to create and achieve new and wondrous possibilities. Let our team at wauko assist you to make your dreams a reality.
